Q&A: Instagram’s Jurassic Jimny Girl

She describes herself as “Just a girl who loves camping, off-roading and dinosaurs!” Since launching on Instagram over a year ago, Jurassic Jimny Girl (Cerise to her friends) has attracted 1500 followers with her 4WD postings. With more and more women getting behind the wheel and heading off-road, we ask Cerise how she got started.

Tell us about your truck, the Jurassic Jimny. Is it your first 4WD?
Yes! This is my first 4WD, first manual experience too. This is my daily driver and I love driving it around and bringing a smile to people’s faces.

What do you love most about four-wheel driving?
I love seeing the scenery and actually the 4WD community is amazing, everyone is so nice and ready to help you out. One time a little Vits had an accident and was stuck in a ditch and about seven off-roading vehicles with winches pulled over to help her out. It was so cool to see!

How did you get started?
I wanted a Jimny and saw the bones of this one for sale and thought you know what, you only live once, let’s do it.

Do you have a favourite trip so far?
I loved the camping trip I went on in the snow in Loch Katrine, in the Canterbury High Country. It was the night I broke my awning with the snow but you’ve gotta break something once to know not to do it again!

What about a trip you just can’t wait to do?
I’ve recently moved to Queenstown and can’t wait to poke my nose in to see all the tracks!

Describe your dream truck.
I’ve already got it! The only thing I would change is getting a sunroof.

Are you seeing more women like yourself, driving their own truck? Or is it still a novelty?
I’m part of an amazing girls 4WD group called COR4x4 and the girls are so supportive. They host 4WD days and trips that aren’t too difficult and make you feel comfortable and safe.

What’s the best piece of 4WD advice you’ve received?
SEND IT. Hahaah – nah the best advice I’ve received is get out of the car and walk the track before you take your car on it. And also to 4×4 with a friend and make sure one of you has recovery gear.

What’s your best piece of advice for women keen to go four-wheel driving?
Just do it! Start off small and just find a dirt road and poke your nose in.

One question you hate from male four-wheel drivers?
I genuinely haven’t had a bad experience with a male 4×4 driver. They are all really supportive and nice. If I ever have needed help, they have helped. The community is great!
